Restore Your Leather Couch

Leather Furniture Restoration Ideas for Your Couch

Leather furniture is quite vulnerable to many of our everyday routines and accidents that wear them down. And although leather furniture restoration can be trying and the flaw may look good — giving your couch a bit of character — you’d probably prefer it otherwise.

Leather couches will eventually show obvious flaws, and though quite vexing at first, it’s slowly accepted as part of having a leather couch. So, here are some best tips and tricks that can make restoration easier:

Repairing Tears, Holes, and Punctures

If you have kids, pets or both, it’s typical to have punctures and tears on your leather couch. But these tears will turn bigger if not fixed as soon as possible. A lot of people just ignore it because it may be expensive to fix, however, there’s an easy fix: superglue.

Now, using the superglue trick usually works if the holes and tears are small, usually less than an inch because larger tears are trickier. So, if the tear is small enough, apply superglue or leather glue to each side of the tear. Press the two sides together so your leather is joined again. This way, the insides should no longer be visible.

Be sure to wipe off visible glue before it dries. Let it dry for an hour and make sure no one sits on the couch. If the tears and holes are bigger, go to a professional.

Smoothing Your Flaky Leather

With use and age, the finish of really old leather couches will start to flake away. And if you own a bonded leather couch, there’s really no easy fix; it’s better to just reupholster it.

If it’s the finish that’s flaking away, try sanding the flakes you see first by using sandpaper. Do it gently and just enough so only the flaking pieces are removed. After that, apply some leather dye to the sanded surface using an application. Try not to spread it on unaffected areas.

You’ll notice as you do the restoration that leather furniture restoration is not easy. Things can go wrong and you can mess things up more by trying to fix or restore it yourself. So, when you’re in doubt, it’s better to consult with leather repair experts.
